Unchained – Episode 63

Unchained was the tenth episode of Quantum Leap’s fourth season to air, with Sam finding himself fighting against an unjust system to help an innocent man. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss ways to avoid suspicion.

Sam leaps into Chance Cole, a member of a Southern chain gang who has long since passed the date he ought to have been released. Chained to him is Jasper Boone (Basil Wallace) who needs to escape as his claustrophobia makes incarceration intolerable. He’s also innocent of the crime he’s been convicted for.

Sam tries to help Boone reach freedom, but after they are re-arrested he stumbles across a plot by warden Cooley (JC Quinn) and a local called Jake Wiles (Don Sparks) to carry out robberies and pin them on innocent men. With no help forthcoming from Captain Elias (Claude Earl Jones), Sam has to fight against the system to help Boone be free.

Unchained was directed by Michael W. Watkins, the fourth of his six shows for the series. The writer was Paris Qualles, who would go on to provide one further story in the future.

In this episode Gerry and Iain considered the art of disguise.
