A Single Drop of Rain – Episode 62

A Single Drop of Rain was the ninth episode of Quantum Leap’s fourth season to air, with Sam helping a returning hero save his home town and his brother’s marriage. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss whether all marriages are worth saving.

Sam leaps into Billy Beaumont, a huckster who travels throughout the southern US to trick desperate people into paying large sums of money on the promise that he can make it rain. Assisted by his young protégé Clinton Leveret (Carl Anthony Payne II), he arrives back in his home town, the delight of his mother, Grace (Anne Haney).

An unusual dynamic develops as Sam’s brother Ralph (Patrick Massett) is rightly sceptical of what he claims to be able to do. Meanwhile, Ralph’s wife Annie (Phyllis Lyons) longs for Sam to take her away from this mundane existence and her loveless marriage.

A Single Drop of Rain was directed by Virgil W. Vogel, his only stint in the chair for this series. The writer was Richard C. Okie, the first of his six scripts for the show, with an additional credit for Ralph Meyering Jr, his only Quantum Leap contribution.

In this episode Gerry and Iain considered the science of precipitation.
