Play Ball – Episode 55
Play Ball was the second episode of Quantum Leap’s fourth season to air, with Sam taking a swing at finding a route to the big leagues for both a grizzled veteran and a troubled youngster as external pressures are brought to bear. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the role of equality in relation to sexual harrassment.
Sam leaps into a veteran pitcher called Doc, whose prime years were spent out of baseball after killing a hitter with an errant pitch during his rookie season in the majors. Al believes Sam is here to get Doc back to that level, but Sam takes an interest in a talented but undisciplined teammate, Chucky Myerwich (Neal McDonough), who keeps getting on the wrong side of his coach (Don Stroud) and has complex issues involving his father (Casey Sander).
With team owner Margaret Twilly (Maree Cheatham) dictating playing time based on her sleeping arrangements and her daughter Bunny (Courtney Gebhart) eyeing up both Doc and Chucky, Sam has dangerous ground to tread if he’s to come out as a winner here.
Play Ball was directed by Joe Napolitano, the eighth of his twelve episodes. The story was by Tommy Thompson.
In this episode Gerry and Iain considered what would be a fair price to play for a shot at glory.
Play Ball was released in 1991. It is 48 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on NBC’s Peacock streaming service in the UK and in the United States. The show is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries.
