Southern Comforts was the sixteenth episode of Quantum Leap’s third season to air, with Sam trying to protect a young woman from her violent husband and steer her away from a life of prostitution. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss how to make a fresh start.

Sam leaps into Gilbert Lanbonte, proprietor of the best cathouse in New Orleans, according to his right-hand woman Marsha (Rita Taggart). Amongst the girls is a vulnerable young woman called Gina (Georgia Emelin) who turns out to be Marsha’s cousin.
Sam isn’t the only one with his eyes on Gina however. Her husband, Jake (Dan Butler) is in town looking to retrieve her. Sam enlists the help of Sheriff Nolan (David Graf) to try and catch out the abusive spouse before he can leave with Gina.
Southern Comforts was directed by Chris Ruppenthal, more commonly seen as a writer, this is the only directing credit of his career. The writer was Tommy Thompson, the fifth of his thirteen stories for the show.
In this episode Gerry and Iain considered comically inept policework.
